Lunch groups are offered to students in grades K-8. These groups take place during lunch and/or recess, and are either led by guidance counselors, school psychologists and/or their talented interns. Many groups are short-term and focus on developing social skills. Students are referred to groups by teachers and/or parents and can only participate with documented parental consent. In the upper grades, students often self-refer for groups. If your child does participate in a group, it is most helpful to have them bring a lunch to school on those days to maximize their time in group.
All 5th graders participate in lunch groups. The purpose of this is to strengthen the connection between the students and guidance counselor, as they will eventually be transitioning to middle school and will have multiple teachers. These groups are usually divided by gender and students are given the opportunity to be in a group with at least one person they would enjoy being with. During the 5-6 weeks in group, students talk and play games, and we often end the time together with a celebration.
